Title: Emulating Medical Communication: A Proof-of-Concept and Ethical Exploration of LLMs in Patient-Provider Interactions
Dr Hazem Zohny

Session Description: This talk details a study investigating the capacity of Large Language Models (LLMs) to adapt to various established healthcare provider-patient communication models (paternalistic, informative, interpretive, deliberative). We will showcase a proof-of-concept using GPT-4, discuss the potential for these tools to enhance patient-centered care by offering choice in communication, and explore the significant ethical considerations and risks that accompany this emerging technology.

Bio: Hazem is a Senior Research Fellow in Practical Ethics, Neuroscience, and Society at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics (joint post with NeuroSec in the Department of Psychiatry). His current research focuses on the ethical and societal implications of advanced AI systems, particularly in healthcare. He leads projects exploring the use of large language models and generative simulations to support clinical communication, ethical deliberation, and policy development. He holds a PhD in Bioethics from the University of Otago, where he worked on ethical and conceptual issues related to human enhancement.
